Question
How would you resolve the following questions using three of the analytical frameworks set out in this chapter, environmental justice, environemental rights, utilitarianism?
U.S. law prohibits the use of the pesticide, Dimethyl Terrible. This is an inexpensive chemical that is very effective at protecting crops but has been linked to increased incidence of birth defects and cancer among field workers and even people living in the vicinity of the farms. Should companies be allowed to produce this pesticide in America and sell it overseas to poorer countries where the pesticide's use is legal? Should it depend on whether the pesticide leaves residues on fruits and vegetables that are then exported back to the United States (sometimes known as the "circle of poison")?
Explanation / Answer
Using environmental justice, i will resolve this problem by avoiding the production and export of the controversial chemical in and out of the country citing the fact that environmental justice should do justice to every living being in this world. By returning the residue back to the country, resources like land and water will get affected and it is not justified for all the creatures in this world. Using environmental rights, i will resolve this problem by citing the rights of the people who are working in the farms and the vicinity of it to live with good health and not to be affected with the chemical. Moreover, people in the other countries who imports the products produced through this pesticide also gets affected. In turn, if the residue is sent back to U.S, the land is going to be affected because of the toxic nature of the pesticide used. Using Utlitarianism, i willl resolve this problem by strictly implementing the law for stopping the production and export of this pesticide so that the law enforcement is maintainable and people will keep continuing the trust on democracy.
