Question
How would you go about collecting data to determine what course of action in terms of continuing education leads to the best outcomes? Focus on designing a study around your particular goals and challenges. For example, why do you want to earn a college degree? What are your major obstacles and risks to going back to school? What future outcomes are you trying to accomplish? While you cannot see your particular future, you can collect information about other people in your situation to see what has worked for them.
#1 Identify the population of your study and formulate two research questions.
#2 Outline a plan for collecting the data. Explain why your chosen method is appropriate.
#3 What sampling techniques will you use to ensure that the sample data represents the true characteristics of the population under study? Explain how this will work.
Explanation / Answer
1) Here we are mainly interested to know which field of higher education would lead to the best outcome so the population which can be considered here is the students pursuing higher education in various fields and topics of our interest and those who have passed out and working.
The two questions which we can put forth to them can be--- a) Is the field of your study in accordance with your choice and are you getting what you wanted for yourself while planning for higher studies? b) Did your field of study help you in getting you a job of your desire and is your job the one you wanted to do?
2) After deciding upon the population, we are to collect the data from a sample selected from the population. We can select a random sample from the population and use the questionnaire method to obtain the data. Since the number of persons surveyed is more, we can circulate these questions among them by printing them on paper and ask for their feedback. In this way we can get our information.
3) After we have received our data we need to categorize them and find out which of the questionnaires are valid and can give us information. Then we can use simple random sampling without replacement to obtain information about the sample data, which then will help us to comment about the population.
We can use softwares like Minitab or R to obtain knowledge about the data and carry out an analysis of variance to test if going to a particular field results in better job prospect or not. In this way we can study our data and comment about the population.
