Question

The picture below shows four square regions. Each of the four regions may have its own uniform magnetic field. If there is a uniform magnetic field in a region, the field is directed either into or out of the screen (or the page, if you printed your assignment out on paper). Two charged particles pass through this region. Particle 1 has a positive charge. The path of particle 1 is a quarter-circle In region A, a half-circle In region D, another quarter-circle In region A, and a quarter-circle In region B. The path of particle 2 is a straight line in region C, and a quarter circle in region D. What can you say about the direction of the magnetic field in each of the four regions? (Select all that apply.) The magnetic field is directed into the screen in region A. The magnetic field is directed out of the screen in region A. There is no magnetic field in region A. The magnetic field is directed into the screen in region B. The magnetic field is directed out of the screen in region B. There is no magnetic field in region B. The magnetic field is directed into the screen in region C. The magnetic field Is directed out of the screen In region C. There is no magnetic field in region C. The magnetic field is directed into the screen in region D. The magnetic field is directed out of the screen in region D. There is no magnetic field in region D. Rank the four regions based on the magnitude of the magnetic field in the region, from largest magnitude to smallest magnitude. (Use only ">" or "=" symbols. Do not include any parentheses around the letters or symbols.)

Explanation / Answer

consider region A
Particel 1 is +ve and always has the tendency to move clockwise in the magnetic field
From the left hand rule we can say the magnetic field is out of the page

Consider region B
Particel 1 is +ve and always has the tendency to move anti- clockwise in the magnetic field
From the left hand rule we can say the magnetic field is into the page

Consider region C
There is no movememnt of the particle due to magnetic field
so net magnetic field in the region C = 0

Consider region D
Particel 1 is +vely charged and has the tendency to move ccounter clockwise in region D
from left hand rule we can say that the magnetic field is into of the page

so the selected options should be
2. Magnetic field is directed out of the screen in region A
4. Magnetic field is dir4ected into the page in region B
9. No magnetic field in region C
11. Magnetic field is directed out of the screen in region D

also, r = mv/qB ( or smaller the radius, larger the magnetic field )
so, particle 1 moves in A, B and D
has smallest radius in D, largest in B
so, Bd > Ba > Bb
