The distances between consecutive charges are equal. (a)12 pt(s) Compare the strength of the electric field at points A and B. ls the field stronger, weaker, or about the same at these locations? (b)[6 pt(s) On a full sheet of paper, draw the field map using 4 lines per Q. Transfer the points B and C to your field map. (c)12 pt(s) Draw the direction of the acceleration of a proton placed at point B (d)[1 pt(s) ]Draw a dipole (two charges on a stick) at point C with dipole moment pointing to the bottom of the page. (e)[1 pt(s) Draw the direction of rotation of the dipole in (d -2Q XExplanation / Answer
1) Electric field at A will be zero due to symmetry but B will have some non zero electric field. Thus electric field is weakest at A.
2) Field lines can easily be drawn which will come out of positive charges and go into negative charges.
3) Since proton is a positive charge, it will accelerate along the direction of the electric field line in that region.
4) The direction of a dipole is from negative charge to positive charge and shown with an arrow from -ve to +ve. Thus this arrow should be drawn pointing at the bottom of the page.
5) Due to the stronger attraction of the nearby -2Q charge, the dipole will rotate in anticlockwise direction.
