Question
2. (8) Imagine a U-shaped vessel such as the one pictured on the right, but with much longer pipe lengths. The vessel contains water. I now pour some oil (which has lower density than water and does not mix with it) into the left tube (above point A). Answer these questions explaining why your answer makes sense with Pascal’s law ( = # + ) a. Would the pressure at point A increase, decrease or stay the same? b. Would the pressure at point F increase, decrease or stay the same? c. Would the top of the water level in the right tube rise, decrease, or stay the same? d. Would the top of the water level in the right tube be lower, higher, or the same as the top of the oil level in the left tube?
Explanation / Answer
a) increases ( as extrapressure is created due to weight of oil)
b)increases
c) rise since oil is added water rises until pressure equals on both sides
d) lower because density of water is more than oil
