2. (8 pts) Is the entropy increasing, decreasing or staying about the same? Use the qualitative entropy rules to determine the answer. Write the answer to the right of each process. discussed in lecture a) Ni(s) + 4COe)Ni(COA b) mowing a lawn using a mulching mower H2CO,(aq)H2OD Co2(8) d) 3H2(g) + N2(g) 2NH 3(g) - e) H20(g)COg)H28) + CO208) f) 5000ethylene(g) -- > polyethylene plastic(s) g) opening a bottle of carbonated beverage (like Coke/Pepsi) h) 2Fe(CO)s(0Fe2(CO))+cog) ntsrele the compound that has the highest entropy and put a rectangle around the compound that hasExplanation / Answer
2. Entopy is the measure of randomness. More is the randomness more is the entropy. Now, randomness in gaseous form is more than in liquid state which have randomness still more than solids.
Thus entropy order is Solid < liquid < gas
Now, More is the number of moles , more is the entropy.
In a) Number of moles on reactant side are more than on product side and is gaseous form. So, in product formation, entropy decreases.
b) In a lawn, grass is in ordered form but while mowing its order decreases or randomness increases. here we use mulching machine still its randomness increases, grass is not in ordered from so entropy increases.
c) In this reaction number of moles on product side are more than on reactant side so, entropy increases.
d) Number of moles on reactant side are more so entropy decreases.
e) In this reaction number of moles on either side of reaction are same. so, entropy remains the same.
f) in this, gaseous molecules converts to solid and number of molecules on reactant side are more. SO, entropy decreases.
g) In closed carbonate beverage, there is gas inside which soluble in liquid under high pressure. which on opening the bottle, move outside. So, after opening the bottle, entropy increases.
h) in this, number of moles on either side are same but in reactant side there are two liquid molecules where as in product side there is one in solid and other in gaseous form. So, entropy remains the same.
