Question

You're watching someone using a small post mall to pound a metal stake in to the ground. You happen to be 125 meters away. You notice that you can see the hammer striking the post but you do not hear the sound at the same time. Assume that the light doesn't take any time to reach your eyes so you see the hammer strike right as it is happening. Also assume the speed of sound in air is 343 m/s. Compute the time delay in seconds between seeing the hammer strike the stake and hearing the sound of the hammer striking the stake.

Explanation / Answer

the distance between the observer and the person with the hammer is 125 m which we take as the distance to be covered by thye sound and use the speed of sound to calculate the time it takes the sound to travel the 125 m distance

time delay is the same as the time taken by the sound to be heard because we assume that light does not take any time to reach the eyes

speed=distance/time

time=distance/speed

time=125/343

t=0.3644s
