Question
You're riding a Ferris wheel while sitting on a scale. A Ferris wheel with radius 8.9 m has period 38 s .
Part A.Find the scale reading for a 75 kg person at the bottom of the Ferris wheel, assuming a constant rotation rate. Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Part B.Find the scale reading for a 75 kg person at the top of the Ferris wheel, assuming a constant rotation rate. Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Explanation / Answer
R = 8.9 m ; T = 38 s
A)m = 75 kg
we know that, w = 2 pi/T
w = 2 x 3.14 /38 = 0.17 rad/s
v = r w = 8.9 x 0.17 = 1.51 m/s
Fc = mv^2/R
Fc = 75 x 1.51^2/8.9 = 19.21 N
weight = mg = 75 x 9.8 = 735 N
At bottom,
W' = W + Fc
W' = 735 + 19.21 = 754.21
Hence, at bottom, W' = 754.21 N
At top,
W' = W - Fc = 735 - 19.21 = 715.8 N
HEnce at top, W' = 715.8 N
