Question
PLEASE HELP WITH #3!!!! What do they mean by 'no equilibrium point'?The answers for 1 and 2 are: 1. 0.025 10m 7m 5m Both pulleys are massless and frictionless and the ropes are massless and inextensible. The platform surface is close to frictionless 1. If the sliding mass m starts from rest a distance h from the left hand side of the platform, show that it will initially move to the right. 2. If there is a very small amount of dissipation in the system (i.e. a very small amount of friction) the sliding mass will oscillate and eventually come to rest on the platform. Find its final resting position, expressed as the distance from the left hand side of the platform 3. If the sliding mass is too small, the situation you solved for in part 2 will not be stable. What is the minimum sliding mass m required? Sketch the system for msliding=0 and show there is no equilibrium point.
Explanation / Answer
No equilibrium point means the system will not be stable, i.e. both masses will accelerate and will not come to rest
When sliding mass will be zero, the tension in both string will be same say T (if you assume different acceleration then for massless sliding block, a = (T2-T1)/0 = infinite, so tension is same T)
7mg -T = 7ma....eq 1
T-5mg = 5ma......eq 2
ading both
2mg = 12 ma
a = g/6
Hence blocks will accelerate and are not in equilibrium
