Ninhydrin Test is for detecting the existence of amino acids. Ninhydrin is an oxidating agent that leads to deamination of alpha-amino acids and proteins that contain free amino acids. It degrades amino acids into aldehydes, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. The net result is a reduced form of hydrindantin. When ninhydrin condenses with ammonia, hydrindantin produce a bluish-purple pigment known as the Rhuemann’s purple.
