Question

1.Discuss the viral genomes in terms of dsDNA, ssDNA, ssRNA, dsRNA and the number of segments of nucleic acid.

2. Animal virus replication of the above viruses (viral replication life cycle) to be explained, with special emphasis on RETROVIRUS (includes a positive and negative sense of RNA) replication in a host cell (this is important for the pathogenesis of viral disease and control with antiviral drugs)

3. Know the differences between “Animal” DNA (ds and ssDNA)

4. Know the Bacteriophage lysogenic and lytic life cycles and understand how and why they differ from “animal” viruses.

Explanation / Answer

1. In viruses different types of genomes are present for example -

dsDNA which means presence of double-stranded DNA
ssRNA means presence of single-stranded RNA
ssDNA means presence of single-stranded DNA
dsRNA means presence of double-stranded RNA

In eukaryotic cells genome can be either linear or composed of several molecules whereas in prokaryotic cells genomes can be circular and singular. Viruses being Prokaryotes can have either single or double stranded nuclear material.
