Your CEO has asked for a detailed description of what the company must do to ensure that it is in compliance with the Biosafety Protocol. You plan to export many LMOs both to be released into the environment and to be consumed, and you operate in countries that have implemented the Biosafety Protocol.
Explanation / Answer
1. The basic mechanisms of CITES to control trafficker in endangered species is agreement between governments where the products of endangered species such as elephant trunks, tiger skin etc are not exported or imported. So that the species will not be targeted for making money.
CITES are effective legally, The evidence is certificate provided to south African police for control of endangered species. But still people kill endangered species illegally.
2. The Europeans have banned the growing of genetically modified crops. The evidence is the survey on GMOs conducted in Europe which stated the distrust of the people on the GMOs. In a personal view even i don't agree the GMO crops since the effect of it is not studied extensively. In case of mutation in natural selection different selection pressure is applied by nature itself to test the mutation or beneficial effect. In case of GMO the so called beneficial effect is not tested apart from its yield. The quality of the GMO crops is still a question mark.
3. The products should be labeled with the type of GMOs used. So that the consumers have the right to decide whether to use or not. The safety protocol of Cartagena should be followed based on the product exported.
