Question
A bowl of water has a flat base of area A = 17.4 cm2 and rests on a table. The height of the water is h = 11.1 cm, the weight of the water is 5.00 N, and the weight of the bowl is negligible (see figure below).
(a) Find the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact with it. (Consider the water directly above the base of the bowl.)
(b) Find the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the surface of the table.
(c) If the base of the bowl is in equilibrium, why are the answers to (a) and (b) not the same?
Explanation / Answer
a) Pressure at the bottom point, P = rho*g*h
= 1000*9.8*0.111
= 1087.8 pa
the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact with it, F = P*A
= 1087.8*17.4*10^-4
= 1.8927 N
b) 5 N
c) here we should calculate the total force on the bowl.
As a whole net force acting on the bpwl is zero.
because, water also exet force on bowl other than bottom surface of the bowl.
