Question
A bowl of water has a flat base of area A = 17.1 cm2 and rests on a table. The height of the water is h = 10.7 cm, the weight of the water is 5.00 N, and the weight of the bowl is negligible (see figure below).
(a) Find the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact with it. (Consider the water directly above the base of the bowl.)
(b) Find the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the surface of the table.
(c) If the base of the bowl is in equilibrium, why are the answers to (a) and (b) not the same?
Explanation / Answer
here,
A = 18.2 cm^2
A = 18.2 * 10^-4 m^2
h = 10.3 cm = 0.103 m
weight of water , w = 5 N
(a)
the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact , F = pressure * area
F = density of water * g * h * area
F = 1000 * 9.8*0.103 * 18.2 * 10^-4
F = 1.84 N
the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact is 1.84 N
(b)
the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the surface of the table , N = w
N = 5 N
the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the surface of the table is 5 N
(c)
the walls of bowl are not straight
the walls will also produce a net upward force,
so the forces in part a and part b are not equal
