Question

A sample of monatomic ideal gas occupies 5.00 L at Asample of monatomic ideal gas occupies 5.00 L at atmosphericpressure and 300 K. Its state is represented by point A inthe figure below. It is heated at constant volume to 3.00 atm(point B). Then it is allowed to expand isothermally to 1.00atm (point C) and at last compressed isobarically to its originalstate.

a) Find the number of moles in the sample

b) Find the temperature at points B

c) Find the temperature at points C

d) Find the volume at point C.

(e) Now consider the processes A B, B C, and C A. Describe just how to carry out each process experimentally.

(f) Find Q, W, and Eint for each of the processes.

A B

B C

(g) For the whole cycle A B C A, find Q, W, and Eint.

I did get 0.203 moles for a and 900k for b but am lost in the others.

                             Q (kJ)                        W (kJ)                             Eint (kJ)

A B

B C

C A

Explanation / Answer

Given
   volume of monoatomic gas v = 5 lt, temperature T = 300 k, pressure P = 1 atm = 1.01*10^5 Pa

a) Ideal gas equation PV =nRT
           ==> n = PV/RT

                         = 1*5/0.08206*300
               = 0.203

b) temperature at point B is

       pressure at B is 3 atm, ideal gas equation

       P1/P2 = T1/T2 ==> T2= T1*P2/P1= 300*3/1 = 900 k

c) temperature at C is same at B (isothermal expansion T is constant)

d) volume at C pressure at C is 1 atm, t = 900 k,

                      PV= nRT
           V = nRT/P
              = 0.203*0.08206*900 / 1
               = 14.99 lts
