Magnetic Fields and Forces.

H. You remember that a charged particle will have a corkscrew motion as it n travels through a magnetic filed. if the field is uniform, theparticle will move with a constant velocity component in the direction parallel ( or antiparallel ) to the field, and move with circular motion along the directions perpendicular to the field. Suppose that the magnetic field gradually gets stronger but stays pointing in the same direction. The particle would still move in a spiral around the magnetic field lines, but as the field got denser, wat would the effect on the radius of the circular part of the motion be ? what about the effect on the particle's spped ? A friend of yours tells you that they guess that the radius will shrink but that the particle's speed will remain unchanged. Do you agree ? justify your answer and be as precise as possible. [ HINT: Can the particle's kinetic energy change ? how does the answer to that question figure into the behavior of the particle as it travels into regions of stronger magnetic field ? ].

Explanation / Answer

As the magnetic force on a charged particle is perpendicular to the velocity, it does not do any work on the particle. Hence, the kinetic energy or the speed of the particle doesn't change due to magnetic force.

now,

According to the magnetic lorentz force acts as the centripetal force causing the charged particle to move in a circular path of radius r with constant speed

qvB = mv^2/R

R is inverversly proportional to B

as B increases the R will decrease because it is inversly proportional to B and it aslo in helical path.
