Question
5) For each of the conditions below, describe the effect of the treatment indicated on Sea rchin sperm and/ or egg. Then, fully explain WHY or WHY NOT this treatment would interfere with species specific interaction between sperm and egg. (8 points) A) adding a cell permeable electron transport chain inhibitor to sea water containing sperm, then adding eggs. B) removing the egg jelly coat and then combining eggs and intact sperm C) Incubating intact eggs with bindin prior to combining intact eggs with intact sperm D) preincubating sperm with extracted egg jelly polysaccharides, and then combining these sperm with intact eggsExplanation / Answer
A) An electron transport chain (ETC) inhibitor blocks the ETC components and prevent its function from changing its ability to change from oxidised to reduced state as a result reduced forms accumulate at inhibitor point and oxidised forms ahead of inhibition point.Due to this energy not released so ATP synthesis stops .So when ETC inhibitor added in water during mating os sea urchin motility of sperm gets affected and this affects fertilization process.
B)This will increase the fertilization rate as jelly coats prevents fusion of multiple sperms at the same time with the egg.
C)bindin is aprotein in sperms help for motility and fertilization process. bindin incubation with intact eggs will not affect the normal process of fertilization.
D)It makes sperm unable or least efeective to fertlize.
