Question

Magnetic field lines are defined so that a tiny compass points tangent to the line at any location. A compass needle is a small permanent magnet whose north end is located at the arrow tip. The magnetic force between two permanent magnets has direction determined by the fact that like poles repel, unlike poles attract. Thus, magnetic field lines point away from the North end and point into the south end of the bar magnet. Click the "Show field lines" button to understand the magnetic field line directions. The field of a bar magnet is a dipole field. A monopole magnetic field (analogous to the electric field of a proton or electron) has never been observed. Since a compass needle points north, it is clear that the south pole of the Earth's magnetic field is located at the Earth's North Pole. Display in a New Window Exercise 29.AF.1 Match each item on the left with the most appropriate item on the right. Magnetic field lines point parallel to the bar from north to south. Magnetic field lines point into the bar. Earth's north magnetic pole. Earth's South magnetic pole. Magnetic field lines point parallel to the bar from south to north. Magnetic field lines point away from the bar.

Explanation / Answer

1) compass is just out side between the pole

2)compass just outside of south pole

3) earth's south pole

4)earth's north pole

5) inside the bar

6)compass just outside of north pole
