For General Botany

A. The first haploid cells that are the product of meiosis in organisms with alternation of generations or haplontic life cycles. = ?

B. A life cycle in which the only haploid cells ever produced are the gametes and the diploid zygote undergoes mitosis. = ?

C. A shared derived charatcer that defines a monophyletic group. = ?

D. The Pigment lost from the chloroplast with the origin of the green plants. =?

E. The name for a multi-celled diploid organism in any organism with any type of life cycle. = ?

Explanation / Answer

A. Meiosis produce haploid cells that are called as spores. The haploid spores undergo germination and grow further to form gametophyte. Gametophyte undergoes maturation and produce gametes.

B. Haplontic life cycle , where the haploids are produced. The only diploid is the zygote which undergoes mitotic divisions. Gametophyte is the dominant stage.

C. The shared derived character that defines a monophyletic groups are calles as synapomorphies. It is the character that is derived from their ancesters and it distinguishes one clade from the other clades.

D. Apicoplasts are the pigments which have been lost completely. It is found in apicomplexa group which are alveolates .

E. Zygote /Sporophyte is the multicellular diploid organisms in any organism with any type of life cycle.

e.g. Cladospora, Acetabularia .
