For Column Chromatography:
Answers and explanations needed. Thank you!
Why is CH_3CH_2CN more polar than CH_3CH_2CH_2CN? Why is CH_3CH_2SCH_3CH_2 less polar than EtSH? Suggest 3 ways to improve the separation of two compounds using column chromatography. If compounds (X and Y) have R_f values of 0.80 and 0.95, respectively, in 1:1 hexane:ethyl acetate in a TLC experiment, should you use a more polar or less polar solvent system to separate them using column chromatography (SiO_2)? Suggest a suitable mixture.Explanation / Answer
(1) EtCN is more polar than propylcyanide (CH3CH2CH2CN) because in CH3CH2CH2CN, there is one carbon extra which adds to the non-polarity of the compound. Hence, CH3CH2CH2CN becomes less polar due to presence of more carbons.
