Question
A series AC circuit contains a resistor, an inductor of 230 mH, a capacitor of 4.20 F, and a generator with Vmax = 240 V operating at 50.0 Hz. The maximum current in the circuit is 200 mA.

(a) Calculate the inductive reactance.
answer= 72.22
(b) Calculate the capacitive reactance.
answer= 758
(c) Calculate the impedance.
answer=_______k
(d) Calculate the resistance in the circuit.
answer=________k
(e) Calculate the phase angle between the current and the generator voltage.
answer=________°
Explanation / Answer
in series circuit maximum current ocurres at resonance condition
AT RESONANCE impedence is purely resistive , i = Imax = 200 mA
=> Imax = V/R
=> Resistance R = V/Imax = 240/(200*10^-3) = 1.2 kilo-ohm .........PART (d)
PART (c) impedence of the circuit
Z^2 = R^2 + (XL - XC)^2 = (1.2*10^3)^2 + (72.22 - 758)^2 = 1.44*10^6+ 470294.20 = 191*10^4
=> Z = 1.38 kilo-ohm
PART (e) phase angle between current and voltage
current will be leading voltage because XC > XL
tan(theta) = (XC - XL)/R = 685.78/1200 = 0.571
=> theta = 29.72 degree
