Question

A wire is formed into a loop and the leads are twisted together, The sides of the loop are labeled A-D. The direction of the current is shown. (The diagram uses the convention that indicates current out of the page and indicates current into page.) On the cross-sectional side view diagram, sketch the magnetic field lines around segments B and D of the loop. Base your answer on your results from section II of the lab. Consider the magnetic field of a bar magnet. How are the magnetic field lines that you have drawn in part 1 similar to those for a short bar magnet? On the cross-sectional view of the loop, write an "N" along the axis of loop to indicate which side of the loop can be thought of as the magnetic "north" pole of the loop. Similarly, indicate with an "S" which side of the loop can be thought of as the magnetic "south" pole of the loop. Devise a rule by which you can use your right hand to indentify the magnetic poles of the loop from your knowledge of the direction of the current.

Explanation / Answer

If you hold a compass near a wire through which current is flowing, the needle on the compass will be deflected. Since compasses work by pointing along magnetic field lines, this means that there must be a magnetic field near the wire through which the current is flowing. The magnetic field produced by an electric current is always oriented perpendicular to the direction of the current flow.

There is a simple method of finding the relationship between the direction of the current flowing in a conductor and the direction of the magnetic field around the same conductor. The method is called the Right Hand Rule. Simply stated, the Right Hand Rule says that the magnetic field lines produced by a current-carrying wire will be oriented in the same direction as the curled fingers of a person's right hand (in the “hitchhiking” position), with the thumb pointing in the direction of the current flow

______________________________

In this case the north pole is C side and the south pole is the A side
