Question
You must complete the circuit of (Figure 1) in such a way that it draws a current of 0.300 A from the battery. The battery maintains a potential difference of 10.0 V with no load, but has an internal resistance of Rbatt = 12.0 .The only material you have is 20.0 mm3 of nichrome, and you must use all of it. your plan is to form the nichrome into a cylindrical resistor. [The conductivity of nichrome is 6.7 × 105 A/(Vm).] https://session.masteringphysics.com/problemAsset/1924742/3/Mazur1e.ch31.p58.jpg
Part A
What must the cylinder length be?
Part B
What must the cylinder cross-sectional area be?
Explanation / Answer
Here,
I = 0.3 A
potential difference , V = 10 V
Rbatt = 12 Ohm
let the length is L
cross sectional area is A
L * A = 20 *10^-9 ---(1)
for the external resistance
R + Rbatt = 10/.3
R + 12 = 33.3
R = 21.3 Ohm
as R = p * L/A
21.3 = 1/(6.7 *10^5) * L/A ----(2)
solving for L and A
L = 0.534 m
A = 3.74 *10^-8 m^2
part A)
the length of cyclinder is 0.534 m
part B)
the cross sectional area is 3.74 *10^-8 m^2
