Question

From the observed time constants in procedure steps 4, 6, and 8 and the measured resistance, three values of capacitance for the ~3300 F capacitor can be determined. Tabulate the three values, their average and their standard deviation. I calculated the RC: Step 4= 1.9s : Step 6=0.9s : Step 8= 3.43s. Step 6 is 2, 500 ohm resistors in parallel.   Step 8 is 2, 500 ohm resistors in series.

I need help with steps please to arrive at the three values of capacitance. I think I can get the average and standard deviation. Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

Calculated RC in step 6 = 0.9s

value of R for step 6 = 500/2 = 250 ohm

value of C for step 6 = 0.9s/250 ohm = 3600 uF

Calculated RC in step 8 = 0.9s

value of R for step 8 = 500+500= 1000 ohm

value of C for step 8 = 3.43s/1000 ohm = 3430 uF

Similarly you can calculate capacitance in step 4 by calculating resistance first and dividing RC by it.

Then average and standard deviation of these three values of C can be calculated.
