Question

5. A car with a mass of 980 kg is initially traveling east toward an intersection with a speed of vc = 21.8 m/s and a 1500 kg pickup is traveling north toward the same intersection. The car and truck collide at the intersection and stick together. After the collision, the wreckage (car and truck) moves off in a direction of 42.0° above the x-axis. Determine the initial speed of the truck and the final speed of the wreckage.

initial speed of the truck

______________m/s

final speed of the wreckage

_____________m/s

Explanation / Answer

Let the car is travelling on X-axis and the minivan is travelling on the Y-axis,

=>Let the final velocity of the wreckage is v m/s and the initial velocity of the minivan is u m/s

By equating the components on X & Y axis by the law of momentum conservation:-

On X-axis:-

=>m1u1 = (m1+m2) x vcos42*

=>980 x 21.8 = (980+1500) x 0.74 x v

=>v = 11.18 m/s

On Y-axis:-

=>m2u2 = (m1+m2) x vsin42*

=>1500 x u = 2480 x 0.66 x 11.18
=>u = 12.19 m/s
