Hi
The degree of burn : Looking at the symptoms of redness, severe burn from shoulders to trunk with redness and blisters indicates Second degree of burns.
Red ness is called Erythema. This means red skin in Greek.
The burn percentage: rule of nine.
Regions burnt – shoulder to navel =abdomen = 18%
Back of thigh = 14%
Total = 32% burns
Cool the burn and warm the patient: The burn patients must be cooled using running water. The burnt surface is kept under running water for 10 -15 min to “cool” it down. On the other hand, the patients must be kept warm to help them recover faster. They can be wrapped, covered with cloths and sweaters or the room can be heated to ensure warmth.
The skin burn opens up the softer tissues for easy microbial infections. The burn wound infections, tissue invasion, and secondary sepsis are extremely high during burn, which varies with the degree and percentage of burn.
The second and third degree burns destroy the sweat glands, which will not be replaced till the skin tissue regrows. Hence they will find it difficult to regulate temperature and experience severe thermal strokes.
The severe burn patients experience water loss from the body. Since the skin is not there, the sift tissues would loose their water soon and this also results in reduced urine output. This is one of the common cause of death in severe burn injuries.
