Question

A pair of parallel conducting rails that are 12cm apart lies at right angles to a uniform magnetic field of 0.8 T directed into the page, as shown in the figure. A 15 ohms resistor is connected across the rails. A conducting bar is moved to the right at 2 m/s across the rails.

a. What is the current in the resistor?

b. What direction is the current in the bar (up or down)? Explain why.

c. What is the magnetic force on the bar?

Please show clear, step by step solution. Thank you!!

B = 0.8 T, into page 15 2 m/s 12 cm

Explanation / Answer

Induced emf

e = BdA/dt

= B * L * v

= 0.8 * 0.12 * 2

= 0.192 V

Current =V/R

= 0.192/15

= 0.0128 A

b) Current is directed in upward

c) Magnetic force is

F = iLB

= 0.0128 * 0.12 * 0.8

= 0.00122 N

Force is directed in downward
