Question

The 20.0 cm by 35.0 cm rectangular circuit shown in the figure (Figure 1) is hinged along side ab. It carries a clockwise I = 4.70 A current and is located in a uniform 1.40 T magnetic field oriented perpendicular to two of its sides, as shown.

1)Determine which of the force(s) exert(s) a torque about the hinge ab?

2) Calculate the forces that exert a torque about the hinge ab mentioned in Part B.

3) Use your results from Part C to calculate the torque that the magnetic field exerts on the circuit about the hinge axis ab.

Explanation / Answer

(1) Since current is perpendicular to magnetic field only in case of sides ab and cd, so force only in side cd would produce torque about the hinge ab.

(2) F = B I Lcd = (1.40 T) * (4.70 A) * (0.20 m)

F = 1.316 N

(3) Torque on hinge ab T = F * perpendicular distance of arm cd from hinge ab

T = 1.316 N * (0.35 m)

T = 0.4606 Nm
