Question

The Mariana trench is located in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 11 000 m below the surface of the water. The density of seawater is 1025 kg/m 3. (a) If an underwater vehicle were to explore such a depth, what force would the water exert on the vehicle's observation window ( radius = 0.174 m )? (b) For comparison, determine the weight of a jetliner whose mass is 8.81 × 10 5 kg

Explanation / Answer

a) P(depth) = P(atmosphere) + hdg
= 101325 + 11000 x 1025 x 9.8
= 110596325 Pa
The force on the window is :

By F = P x A
F = 110596325 x (r^2)
= 110596325 x [3.14 x (0.174)^2]
= 10514021 N

b) weight of the jetliner is :

F = m * g =   (8.81 x 10^5 kg)*(9.8m^2) = 8633800 Newton

F'/F = 10514021/8633800

= 1.218

Therefore, So the force on the window is about 1.218 times the weight of the plane
