Question
A car comes to a bridge during a storm and finds the bridge washed out. The driver must get to the other side, so he decides to try leaping it with his car. The side the car is on is 18.4 m above the river, whereas the opposite side is a mere 1.4 m above the river. The river itself is a raging torrent 62.0 m wide. You may want to review ( page ) . How fast should the car be traveling just as it leaves the cliff in order to just clear the river and land safely on the opposite side? Part B What is the speed of the car just before it lands safely on the other side?Explanation / Answer
Here ,
width , W = 62 m
A)
let the time of flight is t
using second equation of motion
d = u*t + 0.5 * at^2
1.4 - 18.4 = - 0.5 * 9.8 * t^2
solvnig for t
t = 1.86 s
Now, inital speed = 62/1.86
inital speed = 33.3 m
the initial speed of the car is 33.3 m/s
B)
let the final speed is v m/s
using third equation of motion
v^2 - u^2 =2 * a * h
v^2 - 33.3^2 = 2 * 9.8 * 17
v = 38 m/s
the speed of car when it lands is 38 m/s
