Question
The bacterium Escherichia coli (or E. coli) is a single-celled organism that lives in the gut of healthy humans and animals. When grown in a uniform medium rich in salts and amino acids, these bacteria swim along zig-zag paths at a constant speed of 20m/s . The figure shows the trajectory of an E. coli as it moves from point A to point E. Each segment of the motion can be identified by two letters, such as segment BC. Each segment is a vector. For example, for segment AB, the vector’s tail is at A and pointing towards B. Similarly, for segment BC, the vector’ tail is at B and pointing towards C. etc. (1m=10-6m)
draw on the figure above and calculate the total displacement vector.
Explanation / Answer
Total Displacement Vector is AE , where Vector tail is at A and is pointing towards E.
Draw a line from A to E to show Displacement vector.
Vector AE = 40 um i - 20 um j
