Question
Two small identical conducting spheres are placed with their centers 0.66 m apart. One is given a charge of 12 109 C, the other a charge of 23 109 C.
(a) Find the electrostatic force exerted on one sphere by the other.
Magnitude : 5.70e-6
Direction: Attractive
(b) The spheres are connected by a conducting wire. Find the electrostatic force between the two after equilibrium is reached, where both spheres have the same charge.
Magnitude: ???????
Direction: Repulsive
Can someone help me find the magnitude of (b) Im on my last try and i need help. Can you please expllain what you did?
Explanation / Answer
now the net charge of the two spheres is equally distributed
net charge is (12-23)*10^-9 =-11*10^-9
so charge on each sphere is (-11/2)*10^-9 = -5.5*10^-9 C
then Force is F = k*q1*q2/r^2 = (9*10^9*5.5*5.5*10^-18)/(0.66*0.66) = 625*20^-9 N= 0.625*10^-6 N
