Question

A fisherman and his young niece are in a boat on a small pond. Both are wearing life jackets. The niece is holding a large floating helium filled balloon by a string. Consider each action below independently, and indicate whether the level of the water in the pond R-Rises, F-Falls, S-Stays the Same, C-Can't tell. (If in the first the level Rises, and in the second it Falls, and for the rest one Cannot tell, enter RFCCC)

A) The fisherman knocks the tackle box overboard and it sinks to the bottom.
B) The niece pops the balloon.
C) The fisherman fills a glass with water from the pond and drinks it.
D) The niece gets in the water, looses her grip on the string, letting the balloon escape upwards.
E) The fisherman lowers himself in the water and floats on his back

I need the correct answer in order to give full rating.

Explanation / Answer

A) R. (there will be more volume from the boat and both people on the water.

B) R. (The force exerted for the ballon upwards will disapear, then the niece's weight will sink the boat a little bit)

C) S. (Asuming that the area of the pond is much bigger than the area of the boat), for details, you can see the Arquimedes's Principle equation.

D) C. (Here is more delicated, you need to know variables as the surface of the boat, weight of the girl and lift force of the balloon).

E) C. Same reasoning as the "D" part.
