Question

Unpolarized light of intensity 16.0 W/m2 passes through 3 polarizing filters. The second polarizer is rotated 35.0 degrees with respect to the first one and the third polarizer is rotated 58.0 degrees with respect to the second. Find the intensity of the light that comes through the third polarizer Unpolarized light of intensity 16.0 W/m2 passes through 3 polarizing filters. The second polarizer is rotated 35.0 degrees with respect to the first one and the third polarizer is rotated 58.0 degrees with respect to the second. Find the intensity of the light that comes through the third polarizer

Explanation / Answer

given , Io = 16 w/m^2

Intensity thrugh first polarizer, I1 = Io/2

= 16/2

= 8 W/m^2

now Use Malus law,

Intensity through second polarizer, I2 = I1*cos^2(35)

= 8*cos^2(35)

= 5.37 W/m^2

Intensity through third polarizer, I3 = I3*cos^2(58)

= 5.37*cos^2(58)

= 1.5 W/m^2 <<<<<<<<<<<<<-------------------Answer
