Question

(a) Find the resistance R1.
k?

(b) Find the resistance R2.
k?

(c) Find the resistance R3.
k?

A battery with (a) Find the resistance R1. k? (b) Find the resistance R2. k? (c) Find the resistance R3. k? epsilon = 8.90 V and no internal resistance supplies current to the circuit shown in the figure below. When the double-throw switch S is open as shown in the figure, the current in the battery is 1.00 mA. When the switch is closed in position a, the current in the battery is 1.14 mA. When the switch is closed in position b, the current in the battery is 1.86 mA.

Explanation / Answer

remember these about Combination of Resistors

if R1 and R2 are the resistances connected in series then effective resiatcne Rnet = R1+R2

if R1 and R2 are connected in parallel, then 1/Rnet =1/R1 +1/R2 or Rnet =   R1R2/(R1+R2)

same current passes through each of the ressitor in series combination and

same votage passes through eacf of the resistor in parallel combination

apply ohms law V = iR

where V = volatge and i = current

so here

when S is open , RNet = R2 series R3 = R2+R3 = R net

Rnet = V/i = 8.9 /1e-3

R = 8.9 k ohms
-----------------------------

when switch is at A

R = 8.9/1.14 e-3

R = 7.8 k ohms

-----------------

R3 = 8.9/1.86 e-3

R3 = 4.78 k ohms
