Question

A large pendulum with a 200-lb gold-plated bob 12 inches in diameter is on display in the lobby of the United Nations building. It is used to show the rotation of the Earth -- for this reason it is referred to as a Foucault pendulum. If the pendulum is 10 m in length, what is the least amount of time it takes for the bob to swing from a position of maximum displacement to the equilibrium position of the pendulum? (Assume that the acceleration due to gravity is g = 9.81 m/s^2 at the UN building.) s Suspended from the ceiling of an elevator is a pendulum of length L. (a) What is the period of this pendulum if the elevator accelerates upward with an acceleration a? Give your answer in terms of L, g, and a. T = (b) What is the period of this pendulum if the elevator accelerates downward with an acceleration a

Explanation / Answer

Note: As per Guidelines, I answer one question, please post other questions separately.

The period of a pendulum is

T= 2 L/g

= 2 (10/9.8)

=   6.35 seconds

The time to go from one end to the center is 1/4 of the period or

     1.59 seconds
