Question

(c4p28) An 95- kg man stands in an elevator. What force does he exert on the floor of the elevator under the following conditions? The elevator is stationary.

The elevator accelerates upward at 2.3 m/s2.
Tries 0/8 The elevator rises with constant velocity of 3.5 m/s.
Tries 0/8 While going up, the elevator accelerates downward at 1.3 m/s2.

The elevator goes down with constant velocity of 6.0 m/s.

Explanation / Answer

(a) W =Mg+ Ma = M(g+a) = 95(9.8+2.3) = 95*12.1 = 1149.5N

(b) W = Mg+ Ma, here, elevator is moving with constant velocity, so accerlation = 0.

Hence, W = Mg = 95*9.8 = 931 N

(c) W = Mg- Ma = M(g-a) = 95*(9.8-1.3) = 95* 8.5 = 807.5N

(d) W = Mg- ma, here also elevator is moving with constant velocity, so accerlation =0

Hence, W = Mg = 931 N
