Question

You are standing on a sheet of ice that covers the football stadium parking lot in Buffalo; there is negligible friction between your feet and the ice. A friend throws you a 0.415 kg ball that is traveling horizontally at 12.0 m/s . Your mass is 68.5 kg . Part A) If you catch the ball, with what speed do you and the ball move afterwards?Part B)If the ball hits you and bounces off your chest, so that afterwards it is moving horizontally at 7.90 m/sin the opposite direction, what is your speed after the collision? express both answers in cm/s

Explanation / Answer

In both cases you just have to use one fundamental. Law of conservation of momentum.
Mass of ball x vel. of ball = (Mass of ball and mass of body) x Speed of combined body(since they are now together)

A) 0.415 x 12 = (68.5 + 0.415) x Speed

speed =4.98/68.915

speed = 0.07226 m/s =7.226 cm/s

B) 0.415 x 12 = 0.415 x (-7.9) + 68.5 x Speed
speed=(4.98 + 3.2785)/68.5 = 0.12056 m/s

speed = 12.056 cm/s
