Question

A ball gets firmly lodged between the plates of the largest capacitor (CL). When the ball is between the plates, the capacitor charges and acts like a dielectric with dielectric constant K and permittivity K. The capacitor is attached to a battery of voltage V and fully charges. What constant force (F) must I apply in order to remove the ball from the plates? Your answer should be in terms of CL V, L and K(or K) *Hint: what is the energy in the capacitor with and without the Dielectric? In order to change energy I have to do work.

Explanation / Answer

energy stored in the capacitor before dielectric is placed

U1 = 0.5*CL*V^2

energy stored after the dielectric is placed

on placing a dielectric the capacitance increases by k

U2 = 0.5*(k*CL)*V^2

work done is equal to change in energy

W = U2 - U1 = 0.5*CL*V^2*(k-1)
