Question

Throughout the course we've considered the relationships between different personality traits and different aspects of online behavior. For this question, you will write about the following personality trait: narcissism.

Begin by (1) defining the dimension and (2) offering examples of items, statements, or questions that are used to assess it. Then identify and explain (3) three different studies that we’ve considered at some point throughout the course that have explored narcissism in relation to some aspect of cyberpsychology.

In your analysis, be sure to explicate narcissism as it predicts, is predicted by, and/or correlates with some element of online personality, behavior, or identity.

Explanation / Answer

Narcissism: this could be defined as the trait in which there is extreme selfishness observed in a person along with a view that is grandiose about oneself and the person views himself and his talents well above anyone else. Also, this kind of a person is constantly craving admiration of his actions and talents. This person is cent-ered on self and he is not able to distinguish himself from external objects.

Examples that could be used to assess narcissism in a person is unilateral listening, in which the person would only want to hear what they want and would say what they would want. They would only want to put their feelings and concerns forward and focus on their convenience. People who are of this nature, have a habit of always calling themselves right and have a habit of always pointing things at others, when things might go wrong. These people are poor at listening, and this is one of the major examples that point on what kind of nature a narcissist might have.
