Question
what is measured when looking at the net change in displacement of the potato sample?different types of potatoes have varying natural sugar concentrations. Explain how this may influence the experience.
based on the data from this experiment, hypothesize which potato has the highest natural sugar concentration. explain your reasoning.
what was the texture and your observation of the potato samples prior to the experiment? after? did it vary by type of potato?
would this experiment work with other plant cells? what about animal cells? why or why not?
From what you know of tonicity, what can you say about the plant cells and the solutions in the test tubes?
Explanation / Answer
1. You are looking at the movement of water since the sugars are to large to move freely through semi-permeable membranes. 2. A higher [sugar] will equal more movement of water into the cell 3. the potato that absorbs most of the water has the higher [sugar]. 4. ???? 5. What is the experiment?? Not enough info to help here....but you can look at osmosis in anything with a semi-permeable membrane. 6. They will explode as they absorb water......since the [sugar] is higher than just plain water, they will soak up the water, water follows solute....in other words water flows into the are of higher [], hence flowing into the potato cell. Next time give a little more background, you know what the experiment is....I do not!
