Question

5. ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT AND RISKY BEHAVIOR: Adolescence is viewed as a lengthy transitional period in which the individual undergoes major physical, cognitive, and social-emotional changes, and acquires the skills and assets needed to be successful in adulthood. Describe two physical changes, two cognitive changes, and two social emotional changes that occur during adolescence. While teens know about the consequences of risk behavior (drug use, driving, sexual behavior), there’s a discrepancy between what they know and what they actually do. Describe the growth spurt in brain development that occurs during the adolescent years and explain how it contributes to this discrepancy. Multiple contextual and environmental factors influence whether an adolescent will engage in risky behaviors. Describe one neighborhood factor, one school factor, one family factor, and one peer factor that have been shown to either help prevent or encourage risky behavior during adolescence. Describe one intervention/prevention strategy that would effectively narrow the gap between adolescents’ knowledge and risky behavior.

Explanation / Answer

Adolscent or teen is the stage in which girls and boys undergo through harmonal changes, hence there are mood swings or transformation in behaviour. Many get opened to new things or ideas, esp due to body changes teens are somewhat keen about these changes and hence may lead to curiosity of bad fils, or adult content. Teens are easily influenced, and do not want to accept what their parents say. They want to create their own identity, sometimes which leads in drug abuse or smoking or such addictions. Hence even though, teens are aware of hazards, but new ideas or to be a part of certain peer group, they try these ideas.

Open conversation in the family, authoratitive parenting style can be the solutions. Where parents foster their kids to develop logical thinking and teens can by themself get away from any abusive content or substance. Paremts should accept the ideas of children and instead of freaking, should think of their age first.
