Question

Two packages at UPS start sliding down the 20 degree ramp shown in the figure. Package A has a mass of 7.00kg and a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.220. Package B has a mass of 11.0kg and a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.170. (Figure 1) Part A How long does it take package A to reach the bottom?

Explanation / Answer

force down incline = total mass * g * sin20

= (11 + 7) * 9.8 * sin 20 = 60.33 N

total friction force = mass B * g * 0.170 * cos20 + mass A * g * 0.220 cos20

= 9.8 * cos20 (11 * 0.170 + 7 * 0.220 ) = 31.40 N

total force = 60.33 - 31.4 = 28.93 N

acceleration = Force / mass = 28.93 / 18 = 1.61 m/s2

time = sqrt (2 d / a) = sqrt (2 * 2 / 1.61)

= 1.58 s
