Question

Two boxes (m1 = 63.0kg and m2 = 44.5kg ) are connected by a light string that passes over a light, frictionless pulley. One box rests on a frictionless ramp that rises at 30.0? above the horizontal (see the figure below), and the system is released from rest.

Please give a detailed explanation.

Two boxes (m1 = 63.0kg and m2 = 44.5kg ) are connected by a light string that passes over a light, frictionless pulley. One box rests on a frictionless ramp that rises at 30.0? above the horizontal (see the figure below), and the system is released from rest. Find the acceleration of each box. Please give a detailed explanation.

Explanation / Answer

F1 = m1 * g * cos 30 = 63 * 9.8 * cos 30 = 534.68 N

F2= m2* g = 44.5 * 9.8 = 436.1 N

F1 - F2 = (m1 + m2) * a

a = (F1 - F2)/(m1 + m2)

= (534.68 - 436.1)/(63 + 44.5)

a = 0.917 m/s2
