Code of ethics –nursing

International council of nurses (ICN) has recently revised the code of ethics( 2012) . But ANA released the revised code of ethics with 9 points in 2001-

The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems.
The nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community.
The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient.
The nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse’s obligation to provide optimum patient care.
The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to preserve integrity and safety, to maintain competence, and to continue personal and professional growth.
The nurse participates in establishing, maintaining, and improving health care environments and conditions of employment conducive to the provision of quality health care and consistent with the values of the profession through individual and collective action.
The nurse participates in the advancement of the profession through contributions to practice, education, administration, and knowledge development.
The nurse collaborates with other health professionals and the public in promoting community, national, and international efforts to meet health needs.
The profession of nursing, as represented by associations and their members, is responsible for articulating nursing values, for maintaining the integrity of the profession and its practice, and for shaping social policy.

But still nurses code of ethics holds a key point in relation to medical ethics like - beneficence, non-maleficence and respect for autonomy.

As a nurse manager – professional ethics calls for –1)collaborating with other professionals 2) maintaining the integrity of the profession and its practice 3) professional relationship .

Though the nurse manager has the autonomy to take decisions as a team leader , she /he has to always think of the welfare of her peer and colleagues not affecting the patient concerns .

Nurses always act as the advocate of the patients – explains before taking the consent in every procedures. The dignity and individual decision has to be respected irrespective of nursing personnel beliefs and practice.

The health education and choice of medical treatments has to be explained to the best interest of the patient, but the decision has to be reserved for the client, which has to be respected.

2) the faulty information gathering affects the client teaching and medical options laid for the client , which can bring irreversible damage to the treatment of the patient well being .

Careful documentation of the client history , conditions has to be gathered to avoid any delay or negligence of the medical treatment .
