1. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of an No Interruption Zone (NIZ) on the number of interruptions that occurred during the task of medical preparation in a medical ICU and a surgical ICU.

2. The study design included 2 ICUs : a 20 bed medical ICU and a 20 bed surgical ICU in a 947 bed tertiary academic medical center. The 2 ICUs were configured so as the ICU beds were along each of the 4 perimeter walls. Each ICU had 5 decentralized medication carts and 1 central medication preparation area.

3. The independent variable are those that can be changed or controlled in an expriment. In this case, it is the implementation of No Interruption Zone (NIZ), which is the independent variable.

4. Dependent variable is the variable that is being tested or measured in an experiment. In this case, it is the number of interruptions, which is the dependent variable.

5. Yes there were extraneous variables. These were the non-nurse interruptions that originated from clinical partners, radiology, pharmacy technicians, respiratory therapists, family and physicians.
