Question
a 9.0 V battery is connected across two large parallel plates that are separated by 4.5mm of air creating a potential difference of 9.0V between the plates.
A) what is the electric field in the region between the plates.
b) an electron is released from rest at the negative plate. If the only force on the electron is the electric force exerted by the electric field of the plates, what is the speed of the electron as it reaches the positive plate? (mass of the electron =9.11*10^-31kg)
I got 2000 N/C for part a but I don't know if it's right. I'd like both answers and explainations. I'm clueless as how to go about doing part b
Explanation / Answer
A) E = V/d = 9/(4.5*10^-3) = 2000 N/c
b) Workdone on electron, W = q*V
we know workdone = chnage in kinetic enmrgy
q*V = 0.5*m*v^2
==> v = sqrt(2*q*V/m)
= sqrt(2*1.6*10^-16*9/9.1*10^-31)
= 1.779*10^6 m/s
