Question
Dr. Claudia Rawn makes a simple wood vase by turning a wood cylinder on her lathe. The vase has dimensions as shown. The density of the exotic wood used for the vase is 700kg/m3. Determine the following quantities.
Mass of the vase
(include units with answer)
Explanation / Answer
for the complete cylinder ::
Radius = R = 135 mm/ 2 = 0.135 m/2 = 0.0675 m
Length = L = 250 mm = 0.250 m
volume of complete cylinder = pi R2 L = (3.14) (0.0675)2 (0.250 ) = 0.00358 m3
for the inner cylinder ::
Radius = r = (135-19-19) /2 =48.5 mm = 0.0485 m
Length = l= 250 mm - 30 mm = 220 mm = 0.22 m
Volume of innner cylinder = pi r2 l = (3.14) (0.0485)2 (0.22 ) = 0.001625 m3
Volume of vase = volume of complete cylinder - Volume of innner cylinder
V = 0.00358 m3 - 0.001625 m3
V = 1.96 x 10-3 m3
mass = density x volume
so mass of vase = 700 x 1.96 x 10-3= 1.372 kg
