Question

Guys please help me out i have an exam in an hour !
Railroad cars moved around in a switch yard. A car of mass 10000kg and speed of 10m/s is coming onto a track where anouther set of coupled cars pf total mass 50000kg is sitting at rest after the collision the first car rebounds with a speed of 1m/s in the opposit deriction.
A- how fast are the other car ( the ony that were initially at rest) moving after the impact? B- what was the impluse given to the first car C- if the collision lasted for 1s what was the average force of the first car diring the collision ?

Explanation / Answer

Here , let the speed of other car after the collision is v

Now , for the first car

v1 = 10 m/s

v2 = -1 m/s

A)

NOw , Using conservation of momentum

10000*(-1 -10) + 50000* v = 0

v = 2.2 m/s

the speed of other car after collision is 2.2 m/s

B)

Impulse given = change in momentum

Impulse given = 50000 *( 2.2 - 0)

Impulse given = 110000 Kg.m/s

C)

Here , average force = impulse/time

average force = (110000)/1

average force = 110000 N

Using netwon's third law

the average force of the first car during collision is 110000 N in the left direction
