Question
Two forces are applied to a car in an effort to move it, as shown in the following figure, where F1 = 418 N and F2 = 395 N. (Assume up and to the right as positive directions.)
(a) What is the resultant of these two forces?
(b) If the car has a mass of 3,000 kg, what acceleration does it have? Ignore friction.
_____________ m/s2
Explanation / Answer
Vertical force = 418 cos 10 + 395 cos 30 = 753.73 N
Horizontal force = 395 sin 30 - 418 sin 10 = 124.915 N
Resultant = sqrt ( 753.73^2 + 124.915^2) = 764.01 N
Angle = tan-1 ( 753.73/124.915) = 80.59 degrees
b) Mass = 3000 kg
F = 764.01 N
a = F/M = 0.25467 m/s^2
